Fractures of the long bones usually occur after traffic accidents or fall from height. They may be open thus initiating bone infection and/or may represent serious injuries that jeopardize a patient’s life.
Concomitant nerve and vessel injuries are not uncommon.
All such fractures must be treated surgically, the armamentarium involving plates, nails, external fixations. Provided the surgeon is familiar with the principles of minimal invasive surgery, such techniques are preferable.
Postoperative mobilization starts shortly usually followed by physiotherapy.
