Trigger finger is a very common disease. Patients have trouble trying to close or open the finger and that is resolved abruptly when they try more. A click – sometimes painful - is felt at the palm. The disease is more frequently found in patients with diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disease or thyroid dysfunction.
The situation is caused by entrapment of flexor tendons (each finger has 2 whilst thumb one) within a tiny tube – called A1 pulley - found in the palm.
Spontaneous remission may occur but when symptoms persist, surgery needs to be done. Under local anesthesia the tube is incised and the tendons released.
