Fractures of the metacarpals and digits are common in laborers and athletes and can be part of a serious injury that includes tendons, nerves, vessels. The majority are treated surgically with the use of small implants (wires, mini screws and plates). In some cases the implants need to be removed after fracture healing.
These injuries are day-cases. They require a meticulous and strictly followed postoperative program conducted by a properly trained physiotherapist under the surgeon’s supervision.
